Business analysts (BAs) are agile workers who straddle the line between information technology (IT) and business to help bridge the gap between them.
The BA’s role is to help ensure that software developed for businesses are able to achieve their goals. These goals are often organizational-wide goals, but targeted towards stakeholders. Because business analysts work across different departments, they are well-suited to helping the right people connect the dots.
BAs engage with business leaders to help them articulate their vision, learn what limitations they face and discover what other services can add value. In order to balance all of these attributes, they must be able to understand the possible technological output and whether or not it will fit their budget and schedule expectations.

“We may have a perfectly adequate way of doing something, but that does not mean there cannot be a better way. So, we set out to find an alternative way. This is the basis of any improvement that is not fault correcting or problem-solving.”
Edward de Bono, Author, Six Thinking Hats
The role of a business analyst constantly evolves and changes.
Every company has different issues that a business analyst can address, whether it’s dealing with changing technologies, outdated systems, broken processes, poor client or customer satisfaction.
Where the Business Analysts add value in projects:
- Use value to prioritise requirements
- Help to discover new requirements and business needs
- Enable good harmony between IT staff and the business
- Help inform project frameworks used in it
- Support business process recommendations
- Ensuring the right requirements are documented.
